The Benefits of X-Rays for Your Pet

Back to News

Seeing What the Eye Cannot When your pet is sick, injured, or just not acting like themselves, the answers aren't always visible from the outside.

That's where radiographs — commonly known as X-rays — become one of the most valuable tools in veterinary medicine. They give our veterinarians the ability to look inside your pet's body quickly, safely, and without a single incision.
At Green Pines Animal Hospital, we offer in-house digital radiography so your pet can be evaluated and diagnosed without delay.

What Can X-Rays Reveal?

The information a simple X-ray provides is remarkable. Bone fractures and joint injuries are immediately visible, allowing us to determine the exact location and severity so we can plan the best course of treatment. Foreign objects such as toys, bones, fabric, or other items your pet may have swallowed show up clearly, helping us decide if surgery is needed. Heart and lung conditions including heart enlargement, fluid in the lungs, pneumonia, and airway abnormalities can all be identified through chest X-rays. Abdominal issues like bloat, intestinal blockages, bladder stones, organ enlargement, and abnormal fluid accumulation become visible when they would otherwise go undetected. Tumors and masses in the chest, abdomen, or bones can be detected early, giving your pet the best chance at treatment. Dental disease below the gumline — including infected roots, bone loss, and hidden abscesses — is only visible through dental radiographs. Arthritis and spinal conditions that cause pain and mobility issues can be confirmed and monitored over time.

Why X-Rays Matter for Your Pet

They're fast — results are available within minutes, which is critical in emergencies. They're safe — modern digital X-rays use very low levels of radiation, making them safe even for young, senior, or fragile patients. They're non-invasive — no sedation is required in most cases, meaning less stress for your pet. They guide better decisions — whether your pet needs surgery, medication, or monitoring, X-rays help us recommend the right path with confidence rather than guesswork. They catch problems early — routine X-rays during wellness visits or pre-surgical screenings can reveal issues long before symptoms appear.

When Might Your Pet Need X-Rays?

Our team may recommend radiographs if your pet is limping or has suffered an injury, is vomiting or has a swollen abdomen, is coughing or having difficulty breathing, has swallowed or may have swallowed a foreign object, is experiencing urinary difficulties, is due for a dental procedure, or needs a pre-surgical or senior wellness evaluation.
